Custom Duck Canvas Bags

I also fabricate custom bags using natural fiber “Duck Canvas”. Styles include Tote Bags, Duffel Bags, and “Ditty” Bags! All available in various sizes and color combinations. Features include natural cotton straps, real leather grips and #8 cotton duck canvas.

Ditty bags are a great option for rolling and storing and protecting side panel curtains and covers.

Back Cover 30 Camper Top

Here’s an example of a full aft enclosure (camper top) on a stunning 30′ Back Cove. This top is in Sunbrella “Natural” with Solarfix thread and 40 gauge O’Sea vinyl glass. The camper top features concealed panel zippers, full panel roll-up smile windows and 1″ stainless custom frame with all stainless hardware. Navy Top (convertible top)

Here’s a nice example of a navy top. This was fabricated in our canvas workshop with Mark Hood (outside of Boston MA). The navy top, or convertible top, typically stays up and attached to the windshield. This is different than say, a bimini with forward and side curtains. The forward curtain is removable with Bimini’s. With navy tops, the “bimini” is attached to the windshield. We decided to add a rollup center section in this model.

This top is in Sunbrella “Gold” and also features side curtains and aft curtain or “slant back”. It’s also a good example of our custom visor which conceals the zipper on the aft curtain.

Captains chair boat cushions

Here’s a set of new boat cushions for a pair of captains chairs. These are made out of Nautolex marine vinyl in Sea White with Ruby tubing. They have a concealed zipper back for easy maintenance. These cushions just sit on the chairs but we can easily add tabs to securely snap them in place.

Nautolex is a has a very nice, soft texture yet is durable. A premium UV protected marine grade expanded vinyl with knitted fabric backing.

Marine grade materials

Failed ZipperHere’s an example why it’s so very important to use quality marine grade materials. This is a V-Birth cushion that had been re-upholstered by another shop 8 years ago. The fabricator did not use a quality marine zipper. You can see the results. The zipper was unusable and the cover had to be cut off the foam.

 

 

 

 

Wet foamTo make matters worse, the foam was completely wrapped in a heavy poly plastic sheet. We typically wrap the foam so it can be vacuumed and shrunk while fitting the cover. However, I would never use plastic this heavy. The plastic was very noticeable when sitting on the cushion, enough so that it made it uncomfortable. It also retained moisture and didn’t let the foam breath. The foam was waterlogged, covered in mildew and made the V-Birth smell awful. The cover and foam both had to be replaced.

 

 

Look,  we all know that having the word “marine” on the package almost always means you’re paying quite a bit more. The extra investment is often worth it. And when it comes to canvas, cushions and upholstery, it’s always worth it. This cushion would have had many years more service had it been done with Nautolex marine vinyl, a quality YKK Vislon or Coil zipper and Solarfix lifetime thread. The longevity of quality built canvas projects far out-value the savings you might see from accepting cheaper materials.

Here’s a nice little boat upholstery job for a ’64 Chris Craft Commander. This is Nautolex Capitano in cloud white. Very nice marine grade vinyl with soft comfortable texture and a wide variety of colors. The existing vinyl was aged, dry rotted and faded. The rest of the seat was in pretty decent shape. I re-used the frame and pedestal, wood backboards and foam. The hardware was replaced with new stainless. I replicated the existing pattern and matched the classic look of the original vinyl. This was also done in lifelong Solarfix thread. The Nautolex vinyl and Solarfix thread will give this Chris seat many many years of service while looking great!

it’s in the details

Next time you’re in a marina, take a look at the different boat tops. Pay particular attention to the details, how does the “intersection” between the side panels and Bimini or aft curtain look. You’ll often see loose panels or even gaps or openings between panels. Velcro corners warn and loos or exposed zippers..

Very clean, professional custom looks come with some effort and attention to these details. Our method makes sure all zippers are concealed. This makes for a very pleasing and clean appearance but more importantly it extends the life of the zipper by protecting it from the weather and UV exposure. This method also insures clean, tight fits between panels with no openings or gaps. It’s these details that you won’t find in factory canvas work or even some custom work. But it’s these details that make canvas work stand out!
